I most definitely am a make-up hoarder - I hate to throw out part used cosmetics just because ive had them over a certain length of time. But when do we need to have a clear out?
A lot of products vary due to the ingredients used - Natural cosmetics, for example; have a shorter shelf life, as they are packed with less preservatives.
By rule of thumb - This guide is probably best to follow:
Moisturiser - Usually last from 3 months to a year. This may not seem like a huge amount of time, but moisturisers are more prone to bacteria. If you have a moisturiser which has lost its scent or which smells slightly musky, it's probably a good idea to throw it out.
Foundation - Is very similar to moisturiser. It's probably best to keep it for up to a year, and again the scents likely to be a bit musky when its time to bin it.
Mascara - I'm always very cautious with my mascara as im prone to eye infections (bad times) I usually tend to throw mine out after about 6 months, sometimes before. It's a bit easier to tell if a mascara is 'off' if the lid and the brush become very clumpy.
Eyeshadow - I would say eyeshadow is probably the longest lasting cosmetic. I would tend to keep powder eyeshadow for 2-3 years. Liquid or crème eyeshadows however, arent as long lasting - I only tend to keep mine for 12-18 months tops.
Face Powder - Is also fairly long-lasting - I would say 2 years tops, otherwise it may go slightly crumbly.
Eye/Lip Liners - As long as you keep these sharpened, they are likely to last for 18 months- 2 years. I am cautious with keeping eyeliner for too long though due to eye infection.
Lipstick & Gloss - I would only tend to keep either of these for 2 years tops, purely because lipstick is prone to dry out and the gloss container usually becomes sticky. Its a good idea to keep lipgloss brushes clean, especially when used over lipstick or lipstain.
